Policies such as reordering transactions, failing to notify consumers of overdrafts, and high- price overdraft charges are just a few of the ways banks generate increased revenue for themselves at the expense of the consumer. One of the main ways banks increase overdraft fees is by reordering transactions. Instead of posting transactions to your account in the order in which they were made that day, banks go by the “biggest check first” method. This means that a bank would process checks, ATM check card transactions, or payments according to size regardless of when the transaction was actually made. This reordering allows banks to process the largest ones first, leaving multiple “little” transactions to rake in multiple overdraft fees.
Another example is charging overdraft fees for recurring payments or a single transaction. For example, you may have $30 in your bank account, a recurring transaction comes in for $50. The bank would charge one overdraft fee as it should, after the intial transaction fails to go through. But then, a bank attempts to process the recurring transaction a second time soon after, already knowing the account has insufficient funds, charging a second or third overdraft fee.
